Graduate Financial Aid

Graduate students who are admitted to a distance degree (online) program or master’s certificate program can access financial aid through University College. Nonmatriculated graduate students are eligible for private or alternative loans.


Graduate students who meet most of the following requirements may be eligible for financial aid through University College and/or Syracuse University:

Distance Education Masters & Doctoral Programs

Approved Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) Programs 

Types of Aid Available:

Federal loans are available to support most CAS programs. Students apply for the Federal Direct Loan program as a 5th year undergraduate.

  • Dependent students: loan eligibility is limited to $7,500 per academic year.
  • Independent students: loan eligibility is limited to $12,500 per academic year.
  • The above loan eligibility limits are available if a student has not already exceeded the maximum aggregate borrowing limit.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Financial Aid

  • Be enrolled in courses being taken at Syracuse University only. For federal student loans, enrollment of at least six credits per semester is required†.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen with a valid Social Security number.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be making satisfactory progress in your program of study.
  • Not owe an overpayment on any Title IV grant or loan and not be in default on a Title IV loan.
  • Register with the selective service, if required.
  • Meet the financial aid application deadlines for University College aid.
