‘Age Power’ is topic at Institute for Retired Professionals April 15 event

Mary Pagán, gerontologist and exercise physiologist for Wellness Enterprises LLC, will discuss what people can do to stay vibrant and healthy at this week’s Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) gathering on Thursday, April 15. Meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Syracuse, 5833 E. Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville.

Pagán will also lead the audience in “broomstick ballet,” a program she designed to improve hip strength, core and balance.

Pagán holds a master’s degree in health and exercise science from Syracuse University, where she remains an adjunct faculty member. She is a member of the Lifelong Learning Faculty, instructing classes on health aging, age power and the LiveWell program. She is recipient of a Fit for the Next Fifty grant, which offers summer fitness classes to Onondaga County residents. Pagan completed her gerontology certification at SU’s Maxwell School.

Pagán is the creator of the “Broomstick Ballet” Program, a fun and safe approach to build hip strength and balance, utilized in the Fit for the Next Fifty LiveWell Program. She combines it with tai chi, yoga and pilates for all fitness levels. She is an academic advisor and life coach at University College.

The IRP, established by University College of Syracuse University, provides opportunities for retired people to stay intellectually active, expand interests and make new acquaintances. Presentations are made by SU faculty and specialists within the community.
