‘Returning From War: Helping Veterans Reenter Civilian Life’ topic at this week’s IRP

The March 4 session of the Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) will host J. Michael Haynie, assistant professor of entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management. The event is open to the public.

Haynie, who served for 14 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, will talk about the challenges and adjustments veterans face when returning to civilian life and entering college, and what SU is doing to assist them in their transition.

Haynie completed his doctoral dissertation on “Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy” at the University of Colorado at Boulder and holds an M.B.A. from the University of Oregon. Prior to joining SU, he was an assistant professor of management at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

During his years in the Air Force, Haynie trained in logistics and was stationed throughout the United States and the world in both operational and staff assignments.

In 2007, he founded the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program at the Whitman School. In 2009, the program was recognized as a “National Best Practice” by the Department of the Army for serving soldiers and their families in the transition from military to civilian life.

Haynie has received numerous awards for both his scholarship and teaching, including the Guttag Research Fellowship (2007-09), the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Award for Excellence in Research on the General Topic of Entrepreneurship (2007), and the 2007 Mescon Award for the Best Empirical Research in Entrepreneurship from the Academy of Management.

The Institute for Retired Professionals, established by University College of Syracuse University, provides opportunities for retired people to stay intellectually active, to expand interests and to make new acquaintances. Presentations are made by SU faculty and specialists within the community.

Meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Syracuse, 5833 E. Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville. Several times each year, members take part in special activities such as day trips, tours and luncheons.
