Are you an adult who would like to attend college but have been discouraged by your lack of financial resources? If you need financial aid to cover your education expenses, applying for federal student aid for adult students can offer a solution.

All students requesting financial aid must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year. All FAFSA forms must be completed online (SU College code 002882). Additional requirements for completing financial aid applications depend on which type of aid applicant you are:

  • New aid applicants: are students who are returning after stopping-out for a year or more, those who have not applied for aid before, and newly admitted.
  • Continuous-returning aid applicants: are students who were awarded aid in the previous academic year.

Summer 2017

Summer 2017 requires the 2016-17 FAFSA, which – if not already filed – must be filed no later than June 30, 2017.

2016-2017 Academic Year Priority Deadline: May 6, 2016

For Fall ’16/Spring ’17 enrollment:

File the 2016-2017 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applicants may begin filing the FAFSA on January 1, 2016. The last day to file is June 30, 2017.

For Summer 2017, applications will become available in February 2017.

Starting Your FAFSA Application

Federal Student Aid ID

In order to confirm your identity when you access your financial aid information and electronically sign the FAFSA, you will need an FSA ID. If you do not already have one, please follow the instructions here: How to Create an FSA ID .

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is by request only and funds are limited. Federal Work-Study requests, outside scholarship notification, changes to course load or loan amount need to be submitted via a Continuous-returning Student Online Aid Application , regardless if you are a New Aid Applicant or Continuous-returning Aid Applicant.

Use IRS Information for FAFSA

Students and parents who have completed their federal tax return may have their IRS data loaded into the FAFSA starting two weeks after return received by the IRS. An FSA user ID must be set up to authorize the IRS to transfer information to the FAFSA. A new window will open from the FAFSA “Student/Parent Tax Information” web page. Follow the on-screen instructions. Our May 1 application deadline lets you take advantage of this option. The requirement to submit a tax transcript is waived if the IRS data imported to the FAFSA is unchanged.
